WA: WA belatedly moves towards extended shopping hours

West Australian premier ALAN CARPENTER has promised modest reform of the state's shopping
hours .. if Labor wins the September 6 election.

WA is the only state without deregulated retail trading .. after a move to extend trading
hours was rejected in a referendum in 2005.

Under Labor's proposal .. weeknight trading would be extended to 7pm .. and electrical
furniture stores would be able to open on Sundays from 11am until 5pm.

Special shopping districts would be created in the Perth suburbs of Joondalup .. Midland
and Armadale .. to allow Sunday and public holiday trading from 11am to 5pm.

Similar districts already exist in Perth .. Fremantle and Rockingham.

Opposition leader COLIN BARNETT indicated yesterday he may be open to limited reform
of trading hours.
