The Australian Internet Industry Association (IIA) has joined forces with international counterparts to stamp out the practice of "spamming". The sending of unauthorised electronic messages has been legislated against in Australia and the US. The IIA has launched a campaign in 110 countries to educate consumers on how to contribute to the anti-spam effort. Internet users are urged not to respond to spam messages. Spam messages can be misleading, and according to the US Federal Trade Commission, some 70 per cent of all spam contains "fraudulent and deceptive" material.
